CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (5-8) fell twice on Day 2 of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday at the Big League Field of Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral, City, Calif., The Rainbow Wahine first dropped their game against #6/10 Nebraska, 13-0 in five innings. But in the nightcap, Hawai'i was edged out by Oregon State (6-7), 2-1,
#6/10 Nebraska 13, Hawai'i 0 (6 innings)
The Cornhuskers (8-4) got on the board early, posting four runs in the second. After loading the bases with no outs, Lauren Camenzind hit a bases clearing double to center. Her twin sister, Hailey, followed with an RBI-double to set the lead at 4-0 after two complete innings
Nebraska added four more runs in the third and five in the fourth to extend their lead to 13-0 through four innings.
UH's Millie Fidge made her first start of the season in the circle. She took the loss to even her record at 1-1. She allowed eight runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and a strikeouts. Maryn MacNeil threw the final inning, allowing five runs on five hits with a strikeout.
Nebraska's pitcher, Hannah Camenzind tossed a no-hitter in her complete-game, five inning win. Her only blemishes on her stat line were a pair of walks. She had two strikeouts.
Oregon State 2, Hawai'i 1
The Rainbow Wahine and Beavers were locked in a pitcher's duel threw the entire game. UH's combo of
Hannah Pitts and
Taryn Irimata held OSU to two runs, while Oregon State's trio of Amelia Streuber, Haydn Milley and Bailey Murray shut down the 'Bows until the final inning.
The Beavers scored two runs in the third on a two-RBI double by Thompson. That was all the offense OSU needed as their pitching staff was able to escape unscathed multiple times.
The Rainbow Wahine threatened to score getting runners to second and third in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. UH finally was able to break through on the scoreboard in final frame when
Milan Ah Yat scored on a wild pitch
But that would be how the game would end with the Beavers holding off the 'Bows, 2-1.
Hawai'i's Pitts (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work. She did not issue a walk and had one strikeout. Reliever Irimata shut down OSU through the final three innings. She had five strikeouts and allowed just one hit.
Oregon State's Amelia Streuber earned the win to even her record at 4-4. She shutout the 'Bows for five innings, spacing six hits with two strikeouts. Reliever Haydn Milley threw one-plus innings, giving up a run on one hit with two walks and a strikeout. Bailey Murray came in and closed the door in the seventh. She did not allow a run or a hit, but did have a wild pitch/
Hawai'i will conclude their portion of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday, Feb. 21. UH will play Saint Mary's (CA) at 3:00 p.m. HT. followed by an exhibition game against Team Japan at 6:00 p.m. HT. Games will be held at the Big League Field of Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif.
