HONOLULU – For the second time on opening weekend the Hawai'i baseball team won in walk-off fashion, this time a 4-3 thriller to win the season-opening series over Gonzaga Monday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Down 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth,
Tate Shimao got the bats going with a single to left field.
Elijah Ickes followed his lead with a sharp single, this time to center field and advancing Shimao to second. To keep the rally going
Ben Zeigler-Namoa ripped an RBI single up the middle to bring in the tying run. The 'Bows then walked it off on a wild pitch, allowing
Elijah Ickes to walk home for the game winning run, sending Les Murakami Stadium into a frenzy.
The 'Bows got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the fifth. After a
Kamaehu Sanchez walk, Shimao roped a double down the third base line for his first hit and RBI of the season. Shimao later moved to third on a wild pitch and was brought home by a Zeigler-Namoa sacrifice fly, making it 2-0 Hawai'i.
After scoring a run in the sixth, Gonzaga enhanced the drama when they plated two runs on three hits in the eighth inning. The Bulldogs hit back-to-back singles, putting the runners at the corners. Bo Shinkle, the runner on third, would cross the plate on a fielder's choice, while Noah Meffert would come in to score on a Ryder Young single, putting the visitors up 3-2.
Liam O'Brien made his first start of the season on the mound and struck out four and allowed just two hits as he cruised through his five shutout innings of work.
Tsubasa Tomii, the work horse, made his third relief appearance of the series and struck out one.
Saul Soto got the win after entering in the eighth and finishing off the ninth. Shimao notched a pair of hits, going 2-for-5, and scored two of Hawai'i's four runs. Ickes reached base four times, two by way of sharp singles and Zeigler-Namoa drove in a pair of runs while finishing 1-for-3.
The walk-off win was UH's eighth dating back to the start of the 2025 season and marked the 11th time in that span that the 'Bows have won a game when taking the lead in the ninth inning or later. The Rainbow Warriors also won their third season-opening series in the last four years and their third series in a row dating back to last season.
UH will be back at Les Murakami Stadium on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. to take on Wichita State.
