Women's Tennis Rallies Back to Edge Out Sacramento State

HONOULU–The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (2-1) rallied and came from behind in a gritty win over Sacramento State on Friday. For the second-straight day UH won by a 4-3 margin. The Rainbow Wahine fell behind early after losing the doubles point, but the 'Bows battled back to win four-of-six singles matches at the UH Tennis Complex. UH's No. 5, Hannah Galindo clinched the match with a clutch, three-set victory to notch her third-straight singles win to start the season.

The Hornets captured the doubles point to start the match with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. In UH's No. 2 match, Makeilah Nepomuceno and Galindo were leading Sac State's Catherine Walker and Palina Saulevich, 5-4 but the match went went unfinished.

In singles, Hawai'i's No. 1 Grete Gull quickly evened the match at 1-1 after dispatching the Hornets' Irene Riva in about an hour's time, 6-4, 6-1.

But Lou Baudouin gave Sac State at 2-1 lead after sweeping UH's Emma Forgac, 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 3 court.

Hawai'i then reeled off three-straight victories to seal the win.

On the No. 4 court, Sophie Rachor swept Emilija Pranyte in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 to even the match at 2-2.

UH's No. 6 Allaire Berl dropped her first set against Palina Saulevich. But Berl came charging back to hold off Saulevich down the stretch for the 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory which gave UH its first lead of the day at 3-2..


UH's No. 5 Galindo held off Camila Maldonado Gutierrez by a break in the oening set. Galindo fell in the second before rallying back in the third as she jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Maldonado Gutierrez won two games before Galindo was able to break her opponent to clinch the match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

The final match of the night between UH's Nepomuceno and Sac State's Walker, it was Walker who rallied to edge out Nepomuceno for the win on the No. 2 court, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 7-5

The Rainbow Wahine have two weeks before they take on Utah on Friday, Feb. 6 at 4:00 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex.
