HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i junior
Anson Cabello will compete in this week's PGA Tour Sony Open in Hawai'i. The tournament runs Jan. 15-18, 2026 at Wai'alae Country Club.
The Kahului, Maui native will compete in his first professional tournament after winning a local qualifier in November. He will be paired with Zecheng Dou and Pontus Nyholm in the first two rounds. Thursday's tee time is 8:49 a.m. while the group will tee off at 1:19 p.m. on Friday.
This marks the seventh time a Rainbow Warrior has qualified for a PGA Tour event. Most recently, Blaze Akana competed in the Sony Open in 2023 and '24. Other former 'Bows who qualified for the Sony while competing for UH were T.J. Kua (2010) and David Saka (2011). Neither of the six previous PGA Tour qualifiers made the cut.
Cabello is in his third season as a Rainbow Warrior and is off to his best season yet in 2025-26. Through three tournaments in the fall, he averaged a team-best 70.33 strokes per round and shot par or better in eight of his nine rounds. He finished 10-under 203 at the Kā'anapali Classic by OUTRIGGER in November, which tied for the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history and tied for sixth-lowest to par.
The junior has three Top 20 finishes on the year and his low round was 4-under 67, both at the Kā'anapali Classic. In 45 career tournaments at UH, Cabello sports a 73.51 scoring average.
The Sony Open in Hawai'i kicks off the 2026 PGA Tour schedule. The Rainbow Warriors resume their 2025-26 schedule Feb. 5-7 at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Waimea, Hawai'i.
