FULLERTON, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team saw its run at the Big West Championship come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Cal Poly Saturday in its fourth elimination game in the last seven days.
The loss capped off a whirlwind week that began with a win over UC San Diego to get the 'Bows into the Big West Championship. The Rainbow Warriors then won two elimination games in the tournament, the first over UC Santa Barbara Wednesday and the next over Cal State Fullerton Friday.
UH's season ends with a 35-21 overall record, reaching the 35-win mark for the second consecutive year. It marks the first time since the 1991 and 1992 seasons that the program has won 35-plus games in back-to-back seasons.
The Rainbow Warriors got off to a promising start with three consecutive hits to begin the game capped off by a
Ben Zeigler-Namoa RBI double to make it 1-0. UH had a chance to add more, loading the bases with no outs but back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout ended the inning.
Cal Poly got all the offense it would need in the fourth inning, plating two runs to take the lead. The first two Mustangs reached with base hits to start the inning, and after a wild pitch a sacrifice fly and infield base hit plated the two runs.
From there, Mustang reliever Josh Morano kept the Hawai'i offense at bay throwing 6.1 innings of shutout ball while scattering five hits. UH threatened in the top of the ninth, with a pair of hits in the first three batters of the inning but a pair of groundouts ended the game.
Freddy Rodriguez gave the Rainbow Warriors everything they could have asked for in just his second start of the year, going six innings and holding Cal Poly to just two runs on three hits while fanning three.
Ethan Thomas entered in the seventh and struck out four over the final two innings while giving up just one hit.
