Rainbow Warriors Pull Away to Win Series

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team used a consistent offensive attack while getting another solid combined effort on the mound to pull away from Cal State Bakersfield in an 11-4 win Sunday to clinch the series win.

The Rainbow Warriors got contributions up and down the lineup as nine different players recorded a hit and eight different players drove in a run as UH scored in six of its eight turns at bat. Liam O'Brien gave the 'Bows a stellar relief effort, striking out seven over 4.2 shutout innings while allowing just one hit to earn the win. Ethan Thomas pitched the next two frames before Freddy Rodriguez closed things out with a perfect ninth inning.

The two teams traded blows over the first two innings, with UH scoring a pair of runs in the first and one in the second to sit knotted at three.

Hawai'i then took the lead with four two-out runs in the third inning to make it 7-3. Draven Nushida delivered the go-ahead hit with an RBI single up the middle to put UH up 4-3. After a walk put runners on first and second, Hunter Faildo smacked a 1-0 pitch over the left center field wall for a three-run shot to bust things open.

UH kept the pressure on, adding a single run in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 10-3. Jared Quandt doubled home Ben Zeigler-Namoa with two away in the fourth before an RBI groundout and a Zeigler-Namoa sacrifice fly in the fifth stretched the lead to seven.

Itsuki Takemoto capped off the scoring with another two-out knock, plating Matthew Miura in the seventh to make it 11-3.

Zeigler-Namoa led the way for Hawai'i offensively in the series, hitting .615 (8-for-13) with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. He leads the team in hitting with a .340 batting average, including a .350 mark in conference play, and has driven in a team-high 40 runs. Faildo also capped off a big couple of games with his first career homer a day after dropping down a key bunt RBI single in Saturday's win.

UH again did damage with two outs, scoring seven of the 11 runs with two gone in an inning. On the weekend, Hawai'i plated 13 of its 22 runs with two outs and has now scored 46.8 percent of its runs with two away.

The Rainbow Warriors will host a four-game nonconference series against nationally-ranked Oregon State beginning Friday. The first two games of the series are already sold out, however fans can still purchase tickets for Friday and Saturday's games online through SeatGeek, or buy standing room tickets at the door. Tickets are still available for Sunday and Monday's games.
