Softball Sweeps Doubleheader; Coolen Earns 1,200th Career Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team swept their doubleheader with a pair of come-from-behind wins on Friday at Cal Poly's Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.. First, UH recorded its sixth walk-off win of the season, defeating UC Santa Barbara, 5-4 in the make-up game from last Friday's rainout in Honolulu. The Rainbow Wahine then scored four runs in the top of the seventh to leapfrog past Cal Poly to open their three game series with a 4-1 win. With the two wins, head coach Bob Coolen recorded his 1,200th career victory.

Hawai'i's improves to 28-16 overall and is currently tied with CSUN in third place with a 14-8 conference record with five regular season games to go. With its win over the Gauchos, UH has won five Big West series thus far.

Hawai'i 5, UC Santa Barbara 4
Hawaii recorded its 13th come-from-behind win and its sixth walk off win of the season as they defeated UC Santa Barbara, 5-4 on a walk-off, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh. This was the make up game for the game that was rained out last Friday in Honolulu.

UH pitcher Addison Kostrencich hung tough to earn the complete game win to improve to 12-9 overall. She allowed four runs on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Gauchos' Erin Mendoza led off the third with a double down the leftfield line and later scored off a sacrifice fly to left by Giselle Mejia for the early 1-0 lead.

The Rainbow Wahine answered right back in the bottom of the third. Larissa Goshi led off with a walk. Two infield groundouts pushed Goshi to third. With two outs, Milan Ah Yat hit a single to third to drive in Goshi to knot the score at 1-1.

In the fourth, Liliana Thomas drew a leadoff walk and Ellyanna Cinzori followed with her second home run of the season and her career. Cinzori's ball sailed over the right-centerfield fence to give UH a 3-1 lead.

Hawai'i started a rally in the fifth with back-to-back singles by Carys Murakami and Ah Yat. Jamie McGaughey was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Murakami then stole home to give UH a 4-1 lead. But a double play snuffed any further damage.

The Gauchos came charging back in the sixth, scoring three runs to tie the score at 4-4. Jazzy Santos hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Tehya Banks from third and later with two outs Mejia drove a two-run double to the left-center gap to score both Alexa Sams and Mendoza.

In the top of the seventh, UCSB's Banks reached on a one out single. After a flyout to left, UH's Izabella Martinez gunned her out trying to steal second to end the frame with the score still tied at 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, UH loaded the bases with one out. Goshi started things off with a single through the 3-4 hole. After a lineout to center, walks to Murakami and Ah Yat loaded the bases with one out. UCSB lifted pitcher Ava Bradford and entered reliever Sam Stoll who issued a four pitch walk to McGaughey to walk in the winning, walkoff run for the 5-4 win.

UCSB starter Malaya Johnson threw the first five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Bradford threw 1.1 innings in relief and took the loss giving up one run on one hit with three walks. Stoll threw to one batter, McGaughey who was walked to end the game.

Hawai'i 4, Cal Poly 1
UH starter Macy Brandl earned the complete game win to improve to 14-6 overall. She allowed one run one six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Mustangs' Kiara Blanchard led off the third inning with a solo home run to right to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, aided by three Mustang errors, UH rallied for four runs to leapfrog into the lead. After a leadoff strikeout, both Chloe Borges and Goshi reached on fielding errors. Martinez followed with a single to second to load the bases. A third fielding error off a ball hit by Murakami to third scored Borges to tie the game at 1-1. Ah Yat then drew a full count walk to score Goshi. McGaughey then drilled a two-RBI single to center to drive home Martinez and Murakami for a 4-1 lead with a half an inning to play.

Brandl and the 'Bows retired the side in order to end the game.

Cal Poly's Kate Judy suffered the loss in a complete game effort falling to 4-16 overall. She allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
