Men’s Golf Looks To Contend At Big West Championship

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will look to contend at this year's Big West Championship which runs Sunday, April 27 through Tuesday, April 29 at the La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors are seeded 10th in the 12-team tournament and will be paired in the first round with UC Santa Barbara and CSUN. The championship expanded to 12 teams this year with the addition of UC San Diego, which completed its reclassification to Division I, and affiliate members Idaho and Sacramento State.

Long Beach State, ranked No. 22 nationally in the latest Scoreboard rankings, is the top seed and two-time defending champion followed by second-seed Cal Poly (#116), and third-seed UC Irvine (#132). Rounding out the field are UC San Diego (#140), Sacramento State (#143), UC Riverside (#154), Cal State Fullerton (#155), UC Davis (#158), Idaho (#174), Hawai'i (#185), UC Santa Barbara (#191), and CSUN (#224).

The tournament will be played at the 7,056 -yard, par-72 course for the fifth consecutive year. UH finished seventh at last year's championship.

The Rainbow Warriors will send a contingent of Tyler Ogawa, Josh Hayashida, Dane Watanabe, James Whitworth, Anson Cabello and alternate Nathan Szpakowicz.

Hayashida tied for 11th place at last year's championships, concluding the 54 holes at 2-over 218. Ogawa placed 40th and Watanabe tied for 41st. Ogawa's best finish at the event is 34th place during his freshman season.

UH's best all-time finish at the Big West Championship was fifth in 2019 when the 'Bows hosted the event at the Wailua Golf Course in Līhu'e, Kaua'i.

The Big West champion earns an automatic berth in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, and the individual medalist also earns his place in the regional field if he is not a member of the winning team. UH's last NCAA Regional appearance was 1991 and its last individual regional qualifier was Matt Kodama in 2004.
