UH Athletics Selects Five New Members of Sports Circle of Honor

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i Athletics has announced the 40th class of the UH Sports Circle of Honor which includes Kelly Majam (softball), Chris McLachlin (announcer), John Nakamura (coach), Chad Owens (football), and Kolten Wong (baseball).
 
The official enshrinement of the Class of 2025 will occur at the Green & White Celebration scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at The Royal Hawaiian Resort. For more information and table sales, visit www.koaanuenue.org.
 
Owens is the 37th football player to be enshrined while Wong is the 10th baseball player. Majam enters one year after the 2010 team was inducted, which she was a part of, and becomes the second softball player to be inducted. McLachlin, who enters in the "Contributor" category, is the ninth media member while Nakamura, who played baseball at UH in the 1950s, is this year's "Legend" category honoree.
 
The Circle of Honor was established in 1982 to recognize individuals and teams who have contributed to the growth, history and tradition of UH Athletics. The total number of inductees in the Circle of Honor is now 133 individuals and 13 teams, including this year's honorees. Plaques honoring the individuals and teams are anchored on the inner walls surrounding the main concourse of SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
 
Biographies of the Circle of Honor Class of 2025 inductees are listed below: 
 
Kolten Wong… Named first-team All-American by ABCA, Baseball America and Perfect Game in 2011, named third team by Collegiate Baseball … Helped UH win the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament title … Named first-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America, NCBWA, Ping and Rivals in 2009 … Named first-team ABCA All-Region in 2010 and '11 and second team in 2009 … Three-time All-Western Athletic Conference first team selection (2009-11) … WAC Freshman of the Year in 2009 … Hit .358 in his career, fourth in program history … Ranks third in slugging percentage (.563) … Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft … Played 11 MLB seasons with the Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers. … Won National League Gold Glove awards in 2019 and 2020.
 
Chad Owens… Four-year letterman from 2001-04 … Freshman All-American as a return specialist in 2001 when he broke two NCAA records and tied another … Second-team All-American in 2004 and recipient of the Mosi Tatupu Award … Set the UH single-season receptions record (102) ... Two-time first-team all-WAC … 2005 recipient of the Jack Bonham Award … Selected in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars … Inducted into the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame in 2024 … Spent nine seasons in the CFL with Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton and Saskatchewan … In 2012, set the CFL record for combined yards in a single season en route to winning the Most Outstanding Player Award and helping the Toronto Argonauts capture the 100th Grey Cup … Named Divisional All-Star five times, CFL All-Star four times, and was the league's Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2010 and 2011.
 
Kelly Majam… UH career record holder in home runs (72), runs scored (235), and walks (159) … Led the nation with 30 home runs in 2010 ... CoSIDA Academic All-American … Finalist for the NCAA's Woman of the Year award … Three-time first-team all-conference … Second-team NFCA All-American in 2010 … Three-time NFCA All-Region … Big West Defensive Player of the Year (2013) ... WAC Freshman of the Year (2010) ... Started all 232 games of her career … Four-time scholar-athlete … Helped UH to College World Series appearance in 2010 and two NCAA Regional appearances … 2013 recipient of the Jack Bonham Award … Member of the 2010 team which was inducted into the Circle of Honor in 2024.
 
Chris McLachlin… Color analyst for UH men's and women's volleyball broadcasts since 1982 … Worked alongside legendary play-by-play announcer Jim Leahey at KFVE-TV for nearly 30 years … Covered three women's volleyball and two men's volleyball national championship seasons … Announced over 1,000 volleyball broadcasts … Spent 37 years as a coach, administrator, counselor, and teacher at Punahou School … Coached the boys volleyball team to 11 state titles and the boys' basketball team to three.
 
John Nakamura… Staple on the UH softball coaching staff for 25 seasons … Joined Alika Thompson's inaugural coaching staff in 1987 and stayed on through Rayla Allison's two seasons and for Bob Coolen from 1992-2009 … Helped coach 18 all-conference performers … On the coaching staff for nine NCAA Tournament teams and three conference championship squads … Pitcher/outfielder for UH in the 1950s and became a respected coach in the local community … Teacher in the Department of Education system for 28 years … Coached high school baseball for several schools and led Kailua to the 1969 state championship.
