Softball Drops Doubleheader to Conclude Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (10-6) dropped both ends of its doubleheader on Sunday to conclude the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Hawai'i was edged out by Loyola Marymount, 5-4 in their first game and then was defeated 8-0 in five innings by 23rd-ranked San Diego State at the Big League Dreams complex in Cathedral City, Calif..

Loyola Marymount 5, Hawai'i 4
The Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 walkoff win over Hawai'i in the first game. UH had opportunities to score, but was unable to capitalize leaving a combined 13 runners on base for the game.

UH was able to load the bases with one out to start the game, but was unable to push any runs across in the first inning.

Hawai'i loaded the bases again in the third, but this time cashed in. Milan Ah Yat pulled a single down the third base line to drive in both Izabella Martinez and Maycen Gibbs who both reached on singles.

UH starter Addison Kostrencich did not allow a hit through the first 3.1 innings, but Izzy Jamgotchian broke up both the no-hit and shutout bid by launching a solo home run over the right-centerfield fence in the fourth. In the fifth, an RBI single by Sydney Poole drove in Analiah Lummus to tie the score at 2-2.

UH see-sawed back into the lead on a Maycen Gibbs two-RBI double to right that drove in Kayara Tuiloma and Martinez as UH took a 4-2 lead.

The Lions, however, got one run back on a Arianna Jaurequi homer in the sixth. Then in the seventh, LMU got back-to-back RBI hits for the tying and walkoff runs.

Hawai'i's Kostrencich suffered the complete game loss, dropping her record to 4-3. She allowed five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

LMU's Jessica Hubbard started and re-entered the game and threw a combined 5.0 innings. She allowed two runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Kealani Caster threw one inning of relief, giving up two runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Closer Lindsey O'Dell earned the win, tossing the final frame, giving up a hit with a walk and a strikeout.

No. 23 San Diego State 8, Hawai'i 0 (5)
Hawai'i kept things close through the first four innings, but the Aztec erupted for seven runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings until SDSU posted one run in the top of the fourth off an RBI single by Sav Adames that scored Shannon Cunningham.

The Aztecs tacked on seven runs—four coming with two outs—in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jazmin Williams that scored Angie Yellen from third, and an RBI single to center by Cali Decker that drove in Bella Espinoza. Then with a runner at third, Cunningham struck out swinging and forced the throw to first. On the play, pinch-runner Julie Holcomb slid in safely for the 4-0 lead. Quinn Waiki hit a two-RBI single to drive in Ally Dueker and Lala Macario. Espinoza kept things going with a two-RBI chopper over the pitcher that drove in Adams and Waiki.

Hawai'i's Millie Fidge got her first start as a pitcher this season. She started and re-entered the game, throwing a combined 4.2 total innings allowing four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Chloe Borges was able to get one out in the fifth inning. She gave up four runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.

San Diego State's D Hernandez earned the win to improve to 3-1. She shut down UH's offense allowing two hits in the complete game effort with no walks and three strikeouts.

Hawai'i returns home to host its final non-conference tournament of the season, the OUTRIGGER Invitational from Feb. 26-March 1. Coming to Honolulu will be Howard, Jackson State and Washington.
