Men’s Basketball Shut Down By League-Leading UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif.  – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team's struggles continued with a 83-44 road loss at UC San Diego Saturday night at LionTree Arena. With their seventh setback in the last nine games, the Rainbow Warriors dropped to 14-13 overall and 6-10 in the Big West.

Facing one of the top defensive teams in the nation, UH struggled all evening, shooting just 27 percent en route to their second straight season-low scoring total. UCSD meanwhile shot 51 percent from the floor and drained 13 three-pointers on 26 attempts. The result was UH's largest-margin of defeat ever in a Big West game, eclipsing a 29-point loss at Cal Poly in 2013.

The Tritons (24-4, 14-2) continued their hot streak with nine straight double-digit wins and maintained a one-game lead over UC Irvine for first in the Big West. UCSD also completed its first-ever regular-season sweep of UH since joining the Big West.

The 'Bows remained in a tie for seventh in the league standings, a half game ahead of CSU Bakersfield and one game ahead of Cal Poly in a battle for the last two spots in next month's Big West Championship in Henderson, Nev.

Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and added five rebounds and three assists for the Tritons. Tyler McGhie added 17 points, while draining 3-of-6 three pointers. Ryan Rapp led UH with nine points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Tritons blitzed the 'Bows from the outset with a 12-0 run and a pair of 11-0 runs in the first half to take a commanding 42-17 lead at the break. UCSD shot 55 percent in the first half, including a sizzling 9-of-13 from behind the arc. UH, meanwhile, shot just 19 percent in the first half to find themselves in their largest half-time hole of the season.

It didn't get much better in the second half as the Tritons continued to pour it on. UCSD built its lead to as many as 40 points before finishing with a 39-point margin.

The Rainbow Warriors now return to the islands for its final two home game of the season, beginning with a matchup versus UC Riverside on Thursday, Feb. 27. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
