HONOLULU–The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving teams squared off against Grand Canyon for the second straight day. The Rainbow Warriors once again edged out the 'Lopes, 134-128, while the Rainbow Wahine fell just short against GCU, 134-127 on Saturday morning at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. It was another record-setting day as four DKAC records fell and and three UH divers recorded NCAA Zone qualifying marks.
"The Rainbow Wahine & Rainbow Warriors had fantastic performances in our first home intercollegiate competition of the year. GCU provided very strong competition that required us to bring our best selves." says head coach
Steve Allnutt. "The Wahine divers lead the way sweeping places 1-5 on both boards and the platform over the two days. Many swimmers stepped up in off events or new relay spots and shined brightly with lifetime best times in their events. Our Wahine freshmen swept three different events, the 1000 yard freestyle, 400 yard individual medley, and 500 yard freestyle. Not to be outdone, the Warriors won both meets and swept the podium in multiple events as well. In four weeks we'll be competing at the SMU Invitational against more top level competition, so we'll get back to work until then. Go 'Bows!"
43.09. He also won the 50 butterfly crown (21.18). Ostrowski finished the meet anchoring the 200 free relay, with a team-best split of 19.55.
UH senior Holly Nelson led the 'Bows with a score of 22, winning three golds and a silver for the Rainbow Wahine. She won the 50 free (22.62), the 50 butterfly (24.27) and she swam the anchor leg of the 200 free relay to finish the dual meet. Nelson came in second in the 100 freestyle. Nelson's winning time in the 50 free set a new DKAC record, bettering Sara Mose's (GCU) time of 22.78 set last night.
In the 500 free, freshman Brooke Bennett captured UH's first win of the day, leading a freshman sweep of the top three places in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.43. Gaby Kelly and Ester Le Maigat-Lecou finished second and third respectively with times of 5:01.42 and 4:02.27. For Bennett, it was the first of two golds for the freshman as she also won the 200 free with a time of 1:50.42 and was a member of the third place 200 free relay team.
Hawai'i Tom Thalau won the men's 500 free, as UH took four of the top five spots. Thalau led the 'Bows recording a 4:29.78. Eric Kupsky continued his stellar weekend, finishing second with a time of 4:30.69. UH's Riley Clinton came in fourth (4:31.96) and Zach Kohm finished fifth (4:39.54). Thalau finished the day tallying the second-most points for UH with 17.
Alexa Ozment hit the wall first to claim the 50 backstroke coming in at 25.52, while Eva Kovaluk finished third with a time of 26.23.
Hawai'i's Zane Johnson, Aleks Tomaszewski and Victor Daenais swept the podium of the 200 butterfly with Johnson seizing first place with a time of 1:48.77. Tomaszewski touched the wall at 1:48.82 for second and Dagenais finished with a time of 1:49.12 for third.
Dagenais won his first event of the meet coming in with a time of 1:37.54 in the 200 freestyle. Dagenais has a strong showing on Saturday, finishing in third in three events - the 200 free, the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay. He came in third for UH into points with 12.
Zane Johnson led a 1,2,3 finish for the 'Bows in the 200 butterfly. Johnson finished in first with a time of 1:48.77, while Tomazewski was second (1:48.82) and Dagenais finished third (1:49.12).
The women's "A" team of Alexa Ozment, Aziza Meyer, Quincy Key and Holly Nelson captured the 200 free relay with a time of 1:30.92 which set a new DKAC record. The previous record was set in 2000 by the UH team of L. Thomas, S. Watchorn, E. Parkinson, and R. DuPlessis with a time of 1:31.74.
The meet title hinged on the final race of the day for the Rainbow Warriors. In the 200 free relay, the UH team "A" of Tim Brown, Tomaszewski, Finn Brophy and Ostrowski won with a time of 1:19.68.
The men's and women's diving teams will next head to Riverside, Calif. to compete in the CBU Diving Invite from Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Lancer Aquatic Center. The swim teams' next event is the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas from Nov. 19-22.
