TEMPE, Ariz.—Members of the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened the with the qualifying rounds in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Southwest Regionals on Thursday at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.
Two Rainbow Warriors began in the Round of 64.
Toa Maeda fell to UC Irvine's Nathaniel Suh, 6-2, 6-2, but
Kent Mueller advanced with a straight-set win over LMU's Emil Kindhult, 6-4, 6-3. Both
Adriano Dzhenev and
Timothy Li had byes in the first round.
In the Round of 32, UH's Mueller fell to Arizona's Matthias Uwe Kask by a break in both sets, 7-5, 6-4. Hawai'i's Dzhenev fell to Grand Canyon's Daniel Jankowski, 6-2, 6-2, and Li took the second set against Cal Poly's Aaron Eliscu, but fell in three, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3.
Day 2 of the ITA Southwest Regionals will feature the doubles competition and start with the Round of 16 in singles at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz..
