Men’s Basketball Shuts Down Cal Poly, 68-55

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team put together a stellar defensive performance in defeating Cal Poly, 68-55, for its first Big West win of the season Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

In a battle of contrasting styles, UH (9-5, 1-2) imposed its will on the Mustangs (6-10, 0-4 Big West). Cal Poly entered as the nation's fastest paced offense as well as the Big West's top scoring team at 84.2 points per game. UH though held  the Mustangs to nearly 30 points below its average with a suffocating defense. The Mustangs had season lows in points, field goal percentage(.338), three-pointers made (7) and three-point field goal percentage (.226).

Gytis Nemeikša led the 'Bows with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Tom Beattie finished with 15 points off the bench, just one point off his career high. Meanwhile Tanner Christensen notched his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Owen Koonce scored 15 points for the Mustangs, who got no more than eight points from any other player.

The 'Bows led from the get-go scoring eight of the first nine points of the game. Cal Poly missed its first 10 shots  and didn't score their first field goal until more than seven minutes into the contest. UH held the Mustangs to just 25 percent shooting in the first half and took a 27-22 lead at the break.

UH broke the game open in the first five minutes of the second half. That's when the 'Bows came out of the locker room on a 15-2 run to extend its lead to 42-24. UH built its lead to as many as 20 points and the Mustangs never got closer than 11 thereafter. UH shot 50 percent after the break while continuing its work on the defensive end. The 'Bows shared the ball well with 17 of their 23 field goals assisted.

The Rainbow Warriors next head to the road for a pair of Big West games in Southern California, beginning with a showdown at UC Riverside on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT.
