HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i softball team dropped both ends of a Senior Day doubleheader to Big West leader Cal State Fullerton to close the home schedule on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
After the Rainbow Wahine pulled out a 10-inning win in Friday's series opener, the Titans won Saturday's first game 4-0 then completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 victory in six innings to claim the series win.
UH fell to 20-23 overall and 13-9 in Big West play and enters the final week of the regular season in fourth place in the conference standings.
Following the finale, the Rainbow Wahine honored nine seniors in the traditional Senior Day ceremony —
Chloee Agueda,
McKenna Kostyszyn,
Piper Neri,
Malia Xiao Gin,
Dallas Millwood,
Mya'Liah Bethea,
Haley Johnson,
Ka'ena Keliinoi and
Maya Nakamura.
Since the Rainbow Wahine will be on the road when the University of Hawai'i holds its Spring Commencement Exercise next weekend, Agueda, Kostyszyn, Gin, Johnson and Keliinoi were also awarded diplomas in a "graduation" ceremony prior to the senior festivities.
In the opener of the doubleheader, Cal State Fullerton took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the second. UH kept it at 1-0 when Bethea fielded a double off the wall in left field and fired a throw to Gin, whose relay to the plate was in time for the out to end the inning. But the Titans opened up a 3-0 on Ava Arce's two-run single with two out in the top of the third and scratched out another run in the top of the seventh. UH put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the inning. But Cal State Fullerton pitcher Staci Chambers induced two groundball outs to finish off the shutout.
Key-annah Campbell-Pua (6-8) took the loss. Keliinoi highlighted the UH offense with a double in the first inning.
The Titans jumped ahead again in the second game on Kika Ramirez's RBI single in the top of the first. Cal State Fullerton added two unearned runs in the second and pulled away from there.
Nakamura, who suffered a season-ending injury in early April, checked in at first base in the fifth inning in her final official on-field appearance at RWSS. At that point, all nine UH seniors were in the lineup with Kostyszyn, Neri, and Agueda also checking in to close out the game. Nakamura, a three-time All-Big West honoree, bid farewell to the crowd before being replaced.
Haley Rainey, who entered the game in the third inning in relief of Chambers, was credited with the win and UH starter
Addison Kostrencich (12-9) took the loss.
Cal State Fullerton (34-16, 20-4) closed the weekend one game ahead of Long Beach State in the race for the Big West title.
The Rainbow Wahine close the regular season in Northern California with a three-game series at UC Davis. The 'Bows and Aggies will play a doubleheader on May 10 and a single game the following day.
