HONOLULU – Behind a combined three-hit shutout on the mound from three different pitchers and some timely hitting, the Hawai'i baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 5-0 win over CSUN Saturday.
Randy Abshier was masterful in his seven innings of one-hit ball, striking out five while walking three. The senior worked with multiple runners on base just once all night and spun a trio of 1-2-3 innings to pick up his third win of the year.
He turned the ball over to
Danny Veloz to start the eighth, with Veloz working the next 1.2 frames before giving way to
Connor Harrison, who got the final out to earn his second save. Harrison also tied the UH career record for relief appearances, with his 68th outing out of the bullpen to match Lawrence Chew, Lenny Linsky, Ian Jones and Jeff Ball.
The 'Bows got on the board first, striking for two runs in the first inning. After back-to-back singles to lead off the game,
Austin Machado lined a double off the right field wall to make it 1-0. A
Dallas Duarte RBI groundout two batters later made it 2-0, Hawai'i right off the bat.
UH added a single run in the fourth to make it 3-0 before plating two more in the seventh to add some insurance.
Elijah Ickes delivered the first of the two runs with a base hit through the left side to score
Matthew Miura, and Machado drove in his second run of the night on a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0.
The shutout was Hawai'i pitching's fourth of the season, as the Rainbow Warriors have now held CSUN scoreless over 15 consecutive innings after shutting the Matadors down over the final six frames Friday night. UH has held one of the Big West's top offenses to just nine hits with a combined 17 strikeouts and four walks.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
