HONOLULU – In his final start on the mound at Les Murakami Stadium, senior
Randy Abshier delivered one of the best outings of his career to lead the Hawai'i baseball team to a 4-2 win over Cal State Fullerton before a sellout crowd Friday.
Abshier fanned eight while walking just one in a season-long eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits. UH improved to 17-2 since Apr. 16 – the second-best record in the country over that span – while winning its 14th in the last 15 dating back to Apr. 21.
The 36 wins are also the most by the program since 2006 when the team earned an NCAA Regional berth. The 'Bows also won their 10
th straight game at home dating back to Apr. 21, the second-longest active home winning streak in the country and the longest by Hawai'i since March 2021.
The Rainbow Warriors struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning.
Elijah Ickes had a hand in both runs, driving in one on an RBI double to left field to plate
Naighel Ali'i Calderon from first before diving in safely on an infielder grounder for the second.
Fullerton got on the board with a run in the fifth, but UH answered back with two in the sixth to make it 4-1. After
Austin Machado and
Kyson Donahue singled with two outs to chase Titan starter Peyton Jones,
Dallas Duarte delivered a two-run double off the wall in right field against reliever Derek Turner to extend the lead.
The Titans made things interesting in the ninth, plating a run and putting bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs before
Brayden Marx sealed the victory and earned his first career save with a fly out to end it.
Ickes led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with two doubles while making several stellar defensive plays at third base. Machado also finished 2-for-3 while Duarte turned in his 10th multi-RBI game of the season with his two-run double.
