DAVIS, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team opened its seven-game road trip by dropping a seesaw affair, 9-5, in the series opener at UC Davis Friday.
The Aggies out-hit the Rainbow Warriors, 16-8, in a game that saw three ties and four lead changes as UH lost its fifth straight Big West game to drop to 16-11, 2-5 BW on the season.
The two teams went back-and-forth early on with the lead changing hands three times over the first four innings. After UH struck first with a run in the top of the first, the Aggies came back with single runs in the first and second to go up 2-1.
The Rainbow Warriors vaulted back in front with two runs on a
Matthew Miura double in the third to make it 3-2, but UCD came back with three in the fourth to reclaim the lead at 5-3.
The Aggies remained in front, 5-3, heading into the seventh before Hawai'i came back and tied it up with a pair of two-out runs.
Jake Tsukada delivered a two-out single and Miura drove him in with a double to make it 5-4 before
Kyson Donahue came up with a single to center on an 0-2 pitch to plate Miura and knot things up at five.
UCD came right back in the bottom half to go in front for good, scoring four runs on five hits – three of which came with two outs – to open up a 9-5 lead.
Miura led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two doubles to extend his reached base streak to 21 games.
Jordan Donahue hit safely for the 10th straight game while
Kyson Donahue extended his hitting streak to eight games after going 1-for-3.
Austin Machado worked a walk in the seventh inning and has reached base in all 26 games he has played in this year.
