Baseball Beats Hilo to Win Fifth Straight

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team scored early and often to win its fifth straight game with a 13-1 victory over Hawai'i Hilo Tuesday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

The 'Bows own a five-game winning streak for the second time this year behind their third consecutive double-digit run performance, giving them 42 runs over the last three games. Eight pitchers combined to hold the Vulcans to one unearned run on three hits while striking out nine.

The Vulcans got on the board first with a run in the opening inning, but the 'Bows came back with nine runs over the first three innings to open up a big lead.

Kyson Donahue got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first before a passed ball made it 2-1 after one inning. UH then busted out for five runs in the second highlighted by Sean Rimmer's leadoff homer to center field and Jake Tsukada's two-run single. A bases loaded hit by pitch and an RBI ground out in the third made it 9-1.

UH added three more runs in the fifth to make it 12-1. Donahue drove in his second run of the game with a base knock before Dallas Duarte delivered a sacrifice fly and Ben Zeigler-Namoa came through with an RBI single.

Hunter Gotschall picked up his first career win, pitching a scoreless second and third inning with three strikeouts while allowing just one baserunner. From there, the next six UH pitchers worked scoreless innings while allowing just three Hilo batters to reach base.

Tsukada and Machado scored three runs each while Donahue kept his recent hot streak going, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs to give him nine runs batted in over the last three games. Additionally, Itsuki Takemoto got his first career plate appearance and recorded his first career hit with a single in his second at-bat. All 17 available Hawai'i position players saw action.

The Rainbow Warriors open a three-game series against Big West-leader CSUN starting Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
