H Awards Honors Best of UH Athletics In 2023-24

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Athletics Department hosted the 11th annual "H Awards" Tuesday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, which highlighted the success of its teams and student-athletes during the 2023-24 season both in the classroom and in the field of play.

The evening was highlighted by the announcement of the Jack Bonham Award, which is considered the department's highest award and given to the top male and female senior student-athlete who "best exemplifies the ideals for which Jack Bonham stood for in the areas of athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character."

The Bonham Award celebrated its 50th anniversary and two of the recipients, Spyros Chakas of men's volleyball and Olivia Davies of women's basketball, received their awards from UH's first honoree Joey Estrella, who flew in from Hilo, Hawai'i to attend the festivities. Kaylee Glagau of beach volleyball was also recognized as a Bonham winner however she was unable to attend due to team travel.

The department's highest academic award, the Jennifer Matsuda Award, was awarded to men's swimmer Justin Lisoway and softball's Maya Nakamura. Lisoway, who received "The Jenny" award for a record fourth consecutive year, has earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average all five years and is pursuing his second master's degree in computer science. He already received a master's in finance. Nakamura is pursuing a master of education degree and currently has a 4.0 grade point average.

The top team academic awards went to men's golf and women's soccer, the latter of whom won the award for the second consecutive year. Men's golf earned a cumulative 3.36 grade point average while women's soccer posted a cumulative 3.70 grade point average. Every women's team had a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Anna Kiraly of women's volleyball and Jordan Meacham of men's swim and dive were the recipients of the inaugural Ho'omau Award, which was presented to the male and female student-athlete who were the most academically resilient. Academic advisors Kari Ambrozich and Erika Huddle told their stories – Kiraly whose volleyball career came to an end after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and Meacham whose hardship included being diagnosed with cancer.

For athletic achievement, men's diver Mackaby Pennington and women's volleyball middle hitter Amber Igiede were named the Rainbow Warrior of the Year and Rainbow Wahine of the Year, respectively. Pennington was the MPSF's Diver of the Year, winning the 1-meter event and finished runner-up in the 3-meter and platform. Igiede was named to the AVCA All-America third team for the second consecutive year and was the Big West Tournament's Most Valuable Player after leading the Rainbow Wahine to their fourth consecutive conference title.

The Rookie of the Year Award went to men's volleyball setter Tread Rosenthal and women's water polo goalie Daisy Logtens. Rosenthal was the Big West's Freshman of the Year and ranked among the nation's leaders in assists and aces while Logtens was the Big West leader in save percentage.
