Comeback Falls Short at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team fell behind early but battled back in the middle and late innings before ultimately falling 10-6 in game two of the series at UC Santa Barbara Saturday.

After weather pushed back the start of the game by three hours, the Gauchos got a pair of runs in the third inning and three in the fourth on a three-run homer to go up 5-0 before UH came roaring back in the sixth to tie it.

The Rainbow Warriors sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning to plate five runs and chase UCSB starter Mike Gutierrez. Kyson Donahue got the 'Bows on the board with an RBI single before Elijah Ickes came through two batters later with a two-run double to make it 5-3.

A walk loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and Jordan Donahue worked another free pass to push across another run. Dallas Duarte delivered a sacrifice fly one batter later to plate Ickes and tie the game up at five.

UCSB's Aaron Parker had an immediate answer in the bottom of the sixth, smacking a two-out, two-run homer to left center to make it 7-5.

Santa Barbara added another in the seventh to make it 8-5, but UH came right back and loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Duarte picked up his second RBI of the day with a fielder's choice to make it 8-6, but after a walk loaded the bases again a strikeout ended the inning.

Kyson Donahue turned in the first four-hit game of his career and the first by a UH player this year, finishing 4-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Ickes and Duarte each turned in two-RBI games while Jordan Donahue extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single to lead off the game. UH reliever Kyle Dobyns got two clutch outs out of the bullpen in the fifth, getting the 'Bows out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the fifth.

First pitch of the series finale between the two teams will now be Sunday at 12:05 p.m. HT due to expected bad weather in the Santa Barbara area earlier in the day.
