Men's Basketball Pulls Away from CSU Bakersfield in Regular-Season Finale

HONOLULU  —  The University of Hawai'i men's basketball celebrated Senior Night with a 74-57 win over Cal State Bakersfield to close the regular season on Saturday night night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

UH, which won nine of its final 12 regular-season games, earned the No. 3 seed in next week's Big West Championship at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nev. The Rainbow Warriors (19-13, 11-9 Big West) will open the tournament in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 14 at 6 p.m PT/3 p.m. HT versus the winner of the CSUN-UC Santa Barbara first-round matchup.

CSUB closed the regular season at 13-18 overall and 8-12 in the conference and will be the No. 8 seed in the tournament and faces fifth-seeded UC Riverside in a first-round game on Wednesday.

Justin McKoy, one of UH's six Senior Night honorees, scored a game-high 23 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed eight rebounds and had two assists and two steals in the final home game of his lone season with the Rainbow Warriors.

Noel Coleman bid farewell to the home crowd by hitting four three-pointers in an 18-point performance. Juan Munoz drained three three-pointers in a nine-point performance and Bernardo da Silva, the longest tenured member of the team, finished with six points, five rebounds and two assists.

JoVon McClanahan finished with three assists and his lone field goal sparked a decisive 11-0 run after CSUB cut a 20-point UH lead to five in the second half. Matthue Cotton rounded out the group that was honored in the traditional postgame ceremony.

The first half was nip-and-tuck with neither team gaining separation. It was 22-22 at the five minute mark  but the 'Bows went blazing hot, hitting their final eight shots of the half to take a 40-30 lead into the locker room. McKoy (17) and Coleman (10) combined for 27 of the team's 40 points as UH shot 52 percent for the half.

UH continued that momentum in the second, doubling its lead barely four minutes in. UH laid stake to a 55-35 lead following a 15-5 run to open the half. Coleman opened the half with a three-pointer and Munoz hit back-to-back threes to cap the run.

UH then made one of its next seven shots while CSUB went on a 12-0 run and closed to 57-52 with 9:17 left. UH had gone scoreless for over five minutes before McClanahan stopped the bleeding with a layup at the 8:12 mark. That triggered a 15-3 UH burst as the 'Bows reclaimed control. The 'Bows limited the Roadrunners to one field goal over a span of 8 minutes, 11 seconds and Coleman punctuated the run with a three-pointer on his final shot in Manoa.

UH shot 49 percent from the field overall to CSUB's 40.4 percent, while the 'Bows drained 8-of-19 three-point attempts and 18 of their 20 attempts from the free throw line.

The Rainbow Warriors closed the regular season at home for the first time in 10 years and won their final six home games. They depart on Sunday for Henderson in advance of their Big West Championship opener.
