Softball Pulls Away from CSUN in Big West Home Opener

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (9-16, 2-2 Big West) gave up two early home runs to start the game, but then rallied to score 11 unanswered runs en route to an 11-2 win over CSUN in five Hawai'i starter Addison Kostrencich evened her overall record at 5-5 earning the complete game win in UH's Big West home-opener on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
 
Kostrencich allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and four striketous. She retired seven straight batters early on and earned her first Big West win of the season.

The Matadors (16-11, 0-3 BW) came out firing whacking two solo home runs to start the game with leadoff hitter Shaylan Whatman and Lulu Sanchez both going yard before UH could record an out.
 
Hawai'i, however immediately answered back by notching five in the bottom of the first. With one out and runners at first and second, Haley Johnson laced an opposite-field single to left to drive in Ka'ena Keliinoi from second. Later, with the bases loaded, Dallas Millwood drew an RBI-walk to force Izabella Martinez across the plate to tie the game at 2-2. Chloe Borges followed by driving a single through the right-side of the infield to push both Johnson and Keliinoi as UH see-sawed into the lead. Hawai'i capped their scoring in the first with an RBI single to left by Mya'Liah Bethea that scored Millwood for a 5-2 lead.
 
In the second, Millwood looped a single into shallow left to score Keliinoi and in the third, Maycen Gibbs got plunked to start the third. She worked her way around to third then with two outs, Gibbs scored on a CSUN wild pitch to extend UH's lead to 7-2.
 
After Johnson was plunked to start the fourth and Nakamura then blasted a two-run home run to centerfield to drive in pinch-runner Piper Neri. Later in the fourth, Bethea lifted another two-run home run over the right-centerfield fence to extend UH's lead to 11-2.

Isabella Alonso (7-5) suffered the loss and was only able to record one out in the first. She allowed five runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout. Reliever Lauryn Carranco gave up five runs on four  hits in three full innings of work and Alexa Ortiz got the final two outs but gave up a run on two hits.

Hawai"i and CSUN will conclude the three game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. HT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
