FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — University of Hawai'i senior
Mackaby Pennington earned a trip to the NCAA Championships with a seventh-place finish in the men's platform at the NCAA Zone E Championships on Tuesday in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Pennington posted a total score of 642.90 at the Northern Arizona University Aquatic and Tennis Complex to earn one of the seven NCAA berths available in the event. UH's
Juan Gonzalez also made a run at qualifying with a ninth-place finish with a score of 672.05.
Pennington positioned himself to qualify for the national championships by posting a score of 328.30 to place sixth out of 24 divers in the preliminary round. He maintained a spot in the top seven among the 18 divers in the finals to become the first UH diver to qualify for the NCAAs since Zach Lundgren advanced in the platform in 2021. The NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships are set for March 27-30 in Indianapolis, Ind.
In Tuesday's women's 3-meter competition, UH's
Isabelle Lombardi advanced out of the preliminaries with a score of 264.75 to place 18
th out of 50 divers in the morning session. The senior finished 17
th in the finals with a total of 536.80. UH's
Isabella Plantz finished 22
nd in the preliminaries with a score of 261.40.
The three-day meet concludes Wednesday with the women's platform and men's 1-meter competitions. UH senior
Elma Lund is entered in the platform and Pennington and Gonzalez are slated to compete in the 1-meter.
