HONOLULU – Behind a total team effort, the Hawai'i baseball team turned in a dominant 13-4 win over Ole Miss to secure the series split Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors (2-2) used eight pitchers who combined to hold the Rebels to just four runs on five hits while an opportunistic UH offense capitalized on miscues with nine hits while drawing 10 walks.
Zacary Tenn got the win in his collegiate debut, entering in the first inning and pitching 1.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Dylan Waite, and
Sebastian Gonzalez both worked 1-2-3 innings in their UH debuts while
Connor Harrison threw 1.2 hitless frames.
Danny Veloz finished things off with two scoreless innings, ending the series with four innings of shutout ball.
After the Rebels (2-2) got a run in the top of the first, the 'Bows answered with nine unanswered runs to open up a large lead.
Austin Machado got the scoring started with a two-run double in the first inning to put UH in front before
Dallas Duarte drove in two more with a double of his own in the second to make it 4-1.
The Rainbow Warriors stretched the lead with five runs in the third with the help of some Ole Miss miscues. After an error loaded the bases with no outs,
Jake Tsukada and
Elijah Ickes each drew walks to make it 6-1.
A balk made it 7-1 before
Jordan Donahue delivered a sacrifice fly and Duarte drove in his third run of the day with a base hit, giving Hawai'i a 9-1 lead after three.
The Rebels answered with three runs in the fourth to cut the UH lead to four, but the 'Bows got one back in the bottom half to make it 9-4. Both teams went scoreless over the next three frames before a
Ben Zeigler-Namoa bases-loaded walk and
Matthew Miura two-run single in the eighth capped off the scoring.
Ickes ended his first collegiate weekend 5-for-9 with six runs scored while drawing four walks for a .714 on-base percentage. Zeigler-Namoa worked seven walks over the weekend and finished the series with a .500 OBP.
