2024 Football Season in Review

 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • The 2024 season was the third as head coach for former UH record-setting quarterback Timmy Chang. The Rainbow Warriors finished the campaign with a 5-7 mark.
  • UH capped the season with a 38-30 victory over New Mexico for its seventh consecutive win on its Senior Night.
  • UH placed six members on the Mountain West’s all-conference teams, including DB Cam Stone, who was named to the first team. P Lucas Borrow, OL Ka‘ena Decambra, DB Peter Manuma, DB Elijah Palmer, and DL Elijah Robinson earned honorable mention.
  • P Kansei Matsuzawa and RB Landon Sims were selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
  • QB Brayden Schager was among 11 FBS players selected to the AFCA Good Works Teams for his contributions on and off the playing field. Schager was also a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy , which is college football’s premier award for community service and was the male recipient of the Jack Bonham Award, given to UH’s top senior student-athlete who excels in the areas of athletics, academics, and public service. 
  • Schager set a program-record for consecutive starts by a quarterback with 33 and finished No. 2 all-time for career starts by a quarterback with 37. He also finished No. 3 all-time in passing attempts (1,435) and passing completions (851); No. 4 in passing yards (9,096) and total offense yards (9,415); and No. 5 in passing touchdowns (60) and touchdowns responsible for (68).
  • LB Logan Taylor was a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award and for the William V. Campbell Trophy. The Witten Award is given to the nation’s top player who demonstrates an outstanding record of leadership while the Campbell Trophy is awarded to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete.
  • UH placed 24 on the MW academic all-conference team including fourth-year honorees Koali Nishigaya, Karsyn Pupunu, Brayden Schager, Landon Sims, and Logan Taylor. Second-year honorees were Dean Briski, Jamih Otis, Luke Felix-Fualalo, Meki Pei, Kuao Peihopa, and Anthony Sagapolutele. First-year honorees were Carlito Capanang, Spencer Curtis, Hunter Higham, Kansei Matsuzawa, James Milovale, Elijah Palmer, Joshua Sagapolutele, Jamar Sekona, Justin Sinclair, Tasi Tadio, Riis Weber, and Jaheim Wilson-Jones.
  • CB Cam Stone was rated among the top cornerbacks in the country by Pro Football Focus in total defense grade (90.3) and coverage grade (90.4).
  • P Lucas Borrow had the third-highest single-season punting average at 45.50, which ranks among the highest in the country and No. 2 in the Mountain West.
  • The signature win in head coach Timmy Chang’s tenure occurred in the 56th all-time meeting between UH and Fresno State in November. The Warriors rallied from a 13-point second half deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns including the game-winner with 15 seconds left as Brayden Schager found Nick Cenacle with a 3-yard scoring pass.
  • In UH’s win over Nevada, Schager tied a school-record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with four, including 19 rushes for a career-high 120 yards in the Rainbow Warriors’ 34-13 victory.
  • Three of UH’s seven losses were by three points or less – UCLA (16-13), San Diego State (27-24), and UNLV (29-27), two of which were decided in the last minute of the game.
  • Freshman QB Micah Alejado had a historic debut in the season finale against New Mexico. Alejado set UH freshman single-game records with 469 passing yards and five passing touchdowns. He also set school records for completions, attempts, passing yards, and passing TDs by a UH quarterback in his first career start.
  • Alejado earned two national freshman of the week honors following his breakout debut. He was named the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Week by the Maxwell Football Club and the 247Sports True Freshman of the Week.
  • The UH defense took a big step forward under first-year defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman. The defense allowed the fewest total yards in a full season since 2012, including 1,988 rushing yards, the fewest since 2010. The 18 passing touchdowns allowed by the UH defense was also the fewest in a full season since 2009, while the 20 rushing touchdowns allowed was the fewest since 2014.

  • Ka'ena Decambra (OL): 71.7 PFF Grade (4th ranked LT in MW), allowed 3 sacks and 4 quarterback hits in 576 pass blocking snaps
  • Peter Manuma (S): 43 tackles, 3 PD, 1 FF
  • Elijah Palmer (NB): 32 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 1 INT, 6 PD
  • Elijah Robinson (DL): 51 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, 5 sacks, 1 FF

SCHAGER'S HISTORIC PERFORMANCE

Brayden Schager's four rushing touchdown performance tied the UH record for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a game in a 34-13 win over Nevada.

BIG TIME 'BOWS!

The Rainbow Warriors erased a 13-point deficit to defeat Fresno State 21-20 in UH's largest comeback victory in three years.

In his first collegiate start, Micah Alejado delivered the best freshman performance in program history passing for 469 yards and five touchdowns in a 38-30 win over New Mexico.
