HONOLULU — For the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season,
Caylen Alexander and
Kate Lang claimed half of the Big West's women's volleyball weekly awards after helping the Rainbow Wahine sweep a homestand against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.
Alexander was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week for the third straight week and the sixth time in her junior season. The six awards tied the conference's single-season record and surpassed the UH mark of five Big West Offensive Player of the Week awards earned by Nikki Taylor in 2015 and
Amber Igiede last season. Lang picked up her fourth Big West Setter of the Week award of the season and 15
th of her career.
Alexander continued to lead the Rainbow Wahine attack with 5.57 kills per set and a total of 39 kills during the homestand. Alexander opened the weekend by posting 19 kills in 36 attempts to hit .389 in a sweep of UC Santa Barbara. She also had 13 digs in her 13
th double-double of the season. She then put away 20 kills in a four-set win over Cal Poly, recording at least 20 for the 12
th time this season. She also had an ace, eight digs and two blocks to help the 'Bows move into a tie for first place in the conference race.
Alexander enters the week ranked second in NCAA Division I with 457 total kills, 5.25 kills per set and 502 total points. She's fourth nationally with 5.77 points per set and leads the Big West in each of those categories.
Lang distributed 82 assists, averaging 11.71 per set, and called her own number to finish off 12 kills over the weekend. Lang tied her career high with six kills in eight attempts and dished out 40 assists while leading a UH offense that hit .364 against UC Santa Barbara on Friday. She put away six more kills against Cal Poly on Saturday to go along with 42 assists in a four-set victory. Lang also served up five aces in the homestand, two against UCSB and three against Cal Poly.
Lang leads the Big West and ranks 14
th in the nation with 936 total assists and her average of 10.29 assists per set is second in the conference.
The Rainbow Wahine (15-7, 9-3 Big West) take a four-match winning streak on the road this week. They'll face UC Riverside (8-17, 3-9) on Thursday at 6 p.m. Pacific Time (4 p.m. Hawai'i Time) at SRC Arena in Riverside, Calif. The 'Bows then head to Northern California to take on Big West co-leader UC Davis (14-7, 9-3) on Saturday at University Credit Union Center in Davis, Calif. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. Pacific Time (noon Hawai'i Time).
