Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Squeezes Past HPU, 67-63

HONOLULU – In a close game throughout, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got by Hawaii Pacific, 67-63, Tuesday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors moved to 5-1 on the season while concluding its season-opening six-game homestand.

Kody Williams poured in a career-high 24 points on 7-of-8 shooting from three-point land to help UH fend off the Sharks' upset bid.  As a team UH drilled 15 three-pointers, tied for the second most in school history. Williams' seven three-pointers were the most by a 'Bow since Eddie Stansberry's seven at CSUN in March 2020.

UH entered the game having defeated HPU by an average of 29.5 points in the last four meetings. But this meeting was anything but a cakewalk. The Sharks led by as many as nine in the first half before taking a five-point lead at the break.

UH held the Sharks to just 31 percent shooting in the second half and make some key defensive  stops down the stretch to secure the win. Sherman Brashear led HPU with 24 points and hit four of his five three-pointers in the second half to keep the Sharks in striking distance after UH rallied to take a double-digit lead after the break.

HPU jumped out on UH early. The Sharks hit six of their first seven shots and took a 14-5 lead just five minutes in. The 'Bows responded with 11 unanswered points - fueled by three straight triples by Ryan Rapp - to take its first lead of the game and held a 25-21 lead with nearly eight minutes left in the half.  But UH suddenly went cold, missing seven straight shots and going scoreless for nearly six minutes. HPU reeled off 13 straight points during that time and eventually took a 38-33 advantage into the locker room.

Williams sparked UH's comeback by hitting his first four three-point attempts out of the locker room.  The Bows led by as many as 10 points and Williams seventh triple of the game and fifth of the half  gave UH a 60-53 lead with 8:33 left.

it would be the 'Bows last field goal of the game as UH missed its last eight attempts, opening the door for one final HPU push. The Sharks cut the deficit to 62-61 with 36 seconds left, but UH hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch and produced a pair of defensive stops to escape with the win.

The Bows were sizzling from deep (15-of-31) but UH shot just 35 percent for the game after converting on  just 5-of-27 inside the arc. Rapp finished with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three, while Gytis Nemeiska added 13 points and eight rebounds while hitting a trio of three-pointers.

The Rainbow Warriors will next head up to the road for the first time this season when it plays at Grand Canyon (Dec. 3) and against Long Beach State (Dec. 7) in their Big West opener.
