Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rainbow Wahine Out-Muscle Long Beach State, 68-55

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team rebounded from its first Big West loss of the season with a 68-55 win over Long Beach State on Thursday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

With the win UH (8-7) improved 5-1 in the Big West and stayed within arms reach of first-place UC Santa Barbara (6-1). It's the 'Bows best league start since the 1999-2000 season when UH ran out to a 9-1 start in the Western Athletic Conference. The Beach (6-11, 1-6), meanwhile, fell for the sixth time in its first seven league games.

UH led by eight at the break, built a double-digit lead in the third quarter and fended off an LBSU rally with a stout defensive performance in the fourth quarter in which they held the Beach to just six points.

Ashley Thoms scored a career-high 18 points to propel UH to the home win. Making her first start since late November, the senior guard scored UH's first eight points of the game and sparked UH's fourth-quarter run that ultimately shut the door on the Beach. Thoms hit four 3-pointers to tie the career high she set on Dec. 30 at Cal State Fullerton.

Lily Wahinekapu poured in a season-high 19 points and six rebounds, while MeiLani McBee had 11 points and tied her career high with seven rebounds. Kelsie Imai had five points, five rebounds, a season-high seven assists, two steals and her first two blocked shots of the season.

Meanwhile, forward Jacque David made her season debut midway through the first quarter in her first appearance since Jan. 28, 2023 in her comeback from a knee injury. The junior forward logged four points and three rebounds in six minutes of action.

The teams traded baskets for much of the opening quarter and the Beach took a 21-20 into the second quarter. McBee hit her second 3-pointer of the game to trigger a 13-2 run that put UH up for good. After Wahinekapu's putback at the buzzer, UH led 39-31 at the break.

The Rainbow Wahine led by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter, but in a contentious and chippy game, the Beach fought back to cut the deficit to just six points going into the fourth quarter.

The 'Bows ended the suspense quickly in the final frame by going on 13-2 run to put the Beach away. Thoms scored five of the first seven points in that run, including her fourth 3-pointer of the game that pushed UH's lead back to double-digits.

UH held Long Beach State to just 31% shooting for the game and allowed just six points in the fourth quarter while recording 12 steals and six blocked shots.

The Rainbow Wahine close their homestand on Saturday against UC San Diego (7-10, 3-3). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
