IRVINE, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team dropped game two of its series at UC Irvine, 6-0, Saturday to even up the crucial three-game weekend for both teams at a game apiece.
A trio of Anteater pitchers combined to shut the 'Bows out while scattering four hits, striking out nine and walking just two. Michael Stanford started for UCI and went seven innings to get the win, allowing just two hits and striking out five before Tanner Brooks and Jacob King worked a shutout inning each to hand UH its first shutout loss of the season.
For the second straight day, the Anteaters (29-14, 11-9 Big West) got on the board in the first inning. After a walk to start the game, Caden Kendle hit an opposite field two-run homer to right field to make it 2-0, UCI after one.
The Anteaters added to their lead with single runs in the second and third to make it 4-0. After UCI chased Hawai'i (22-17, 11-9 Big West) starter
Randy Abshier in the fifth, Thomas McCaffrey extended the Irvine lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer.
Jacob Igawa extended his hitting streak to 12 games, finishing 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, while
Jared Quandt continued his strong weekend with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Dalton Renne turned in the best effort of the day on the mound for the 'Bows, throwing three shutout innings while allowing just one hit in relief.
The 'Bows will go for the series win in Sunday's finale between the two teams at 10 a.m. HT.
