HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (11-6, 0-0 Big West) shut down Pacific, 7-0 to win its fifth-straight game on the third day of the Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament. UH starter
Brianna Lopez fired her third-consecutive shutout and got some stellar defensive help to stymie the Tigers. Five of UH's nine hits went for extra bases as Rachel "Bueller" Sabourin led the offense going 2-for-3 with two RBI-doubles and Xiao Gin picked up her third straight game with multiple-hits on Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Lopez fanned five Pacific batters while walking just one while giving up six hits as she earned her seventh career shutout.
Hawai'i loaded the bases with no outs to start the game.
Haley Johnson drew a walk to force Xiao Gin across the plate. Later, Sabourin drilled a double that bounced off the left-centerfield wall to drive in both
Maya Nakamura and
Haley Johnson for an early 3-0 lead.
Mya'Liah Bethea reached on a one out single to left in the third. After stealing second, Bethea scored on Sabourin's second RBI-double of the game, lengthening UH's lead to 4-0.
Hawai'i extended their lead to 6-0 in the fourth.
Ka'ena Keliinoi led off with a double down the leftfield line. Nakamura followed by blasting a triple down the first baseline to easily score Keliinoi. Johnson followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to left to score Nakamura from third.
Izabella Martinez capped the scoring with an RBI-single to right with the bases loaded in the sixth. Her hit drove in Keliinoi as she scored for the second time in the game.
UH's defense was solid behind Lopez. Nakamura made a couple of web gems at second base while leftfielder
Cierra Yamamoto gunned out a runner trying to score from second at the plate on the fly and Keliinoi cut down a Tiger runner trying to extend a double to a triple with a nice relay from Keliinoi-to-Gin-to-Sabourin.
Pacific starter Hannah Glad took the loss, dropping her record to 1-1. She gave up four runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched. Vanessa Strong threw the final 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
The 'Bows continue its play in the Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament on Sunday, taking on Niagara at 12:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
