HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team will participate in the Cowgirl Classic, April 3-4 in Maricopa, Ariz., its final tune-up before the Big West Championship later in the month.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament is hosted by Wyoming and will be played at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. The par-72 track will play at 6,191-yards. A total of 17 teams will be competing in this year's field – Boise State, California Baptist, Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Idaho, Long Beach State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, UC Davis, UNLV, UTEP, and Wyoming.
This year marks the third consecutive season in which the Rainbow Wahine will compete in the Cowgirl Classic. UH finished in seventh place each time.
UH's contingent includes
Focus Jonglikit,
Mayumi Umezu,
Hyeonji Kang,
Wendy Song, and
Monica Johnson. At last year's Cowgirl Classic, Umezu tied for 20
th place with a 6-over 222 total;
Hyeonji Kang tied for 38
th place at 226; and
Monica Johnson tied for 65
th at 232.
The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a 14
th place finish at the Ānuenue Spring Break Classic last week in Kā'anapali, Maui. Jonglikit was UH's top finisher with a tie for 44
th place.
Jonglikit and Song will be competing for the first time at the Cowgirl Classic.
The Big West Championship runs April 16-18 at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas, Nev. UH shared the title last year with Cal Poly. It was Hawai'i's first Big West women's golf championship in program history.
