HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team returns to southern California for the UC San Diego Invitational, March 27-28 at the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif.
The tournament, hosted by UCSD, is in its third year of competition and first at Torrey Pines. Participants will play 54 holes – 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday – at the 7,258-yard North Course with a 7:30 a.m. PT shotgun start each day.
This year's field includes 15 teams, including six Big West teams. UH is the fourth highest ranked team in the field with a No. 151 national ranking. Other Big West teams competing are CSUN, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and UC Santa Barbara.
UH competed in last year's event which was held at La Costa Golf Course in Carlsbad, Calif. The Rainbow Warriors finished 10
th while
Atsuya Oishi and
Tyler Ogawa tied for 26
th and 40
th, respectively. Oishi is UH's top golfer this season with a 72.2 scoring average while Ogawa sports a 74.4 average.
Designed by legendary course architect William P. Bell and completed by his son, William F. Bell, Torrey Pines opened in 1957. It offers two 18-hole Championship courses – the North and South courses. Torrey Pines hosted the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Open Championships and has hosted the Farmers Insurance Open annually since 1968.
The tournament is UH's seventh this season and second straight in the San Diego area. Earlier this month, the Warriors competed in the Lamkin Invitational which was held in Chula Vista, Calif., and took 14
th place.
