HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (6-5, 0-0 Big West) won the doubles point but lost the match to 53
rd-ranked Washington, 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Warriors started the match off well capturing the doubles point. UH's No. 2 pair of
Axel Labrunie and
Kilian Maitre knocked off UW's Nedim Suko and Brett Pearson, 6-3. Hawai'i's No. 1 duo of
Andre Ilagan and
Lucas Labrunie then upset 61
st-ranked Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn by a break, 6-4 to secure the early 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Huskies won five of six matches for the win. UW tied the match at 1-1 after No. 102 Cesar Boucheleghem defeated UH's
Guillaume Tattevin on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 6-3. Hawai'i's 68
th-ranked Ilagan then gave UH a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Han-Chih Lin at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Later with the UW leading 3-2, it came down to the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. Playing at No. 6,
Andy Hernandez gave a valient effort, but fell short in two close sets to UW's Pearson, 7-5, 7-6 (3). In the final match of the day, UH's
Kilian Maitre forced a third set against Him Henrikx by taking the second set tie-breaker, but fell in the third, 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2.
The Rainbow Warriors continue their final homestand next week with three conference matches. UH opens their Big West schedule taking on UC Riverside on Wednesday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. HT. On Friday, March 31, UH will battle UC San Diego at 1:00 p.m. HT followed by UC Irvine on Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. HT.
