Rainbow Sailors Enjoy Historic Weekend With Pair Of Wins

In an unprecedented weekend, the University of Hawaii coed sailing program entered two separate regattas and captured both of them. The Rainbows took home the championship trophy of the prestigious Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup in Southern California, while also claiming first place at the St. Francis Invitational in Northern California.

The Harbor Cup has gained a reputation as one of the leading intercollegiate sailing invitationals in the nation since its inception in 2008. Last year, UH finished runner-up for its highest finish ever, before breaking through this year with a fantastic run. Competing in the "big boats" - Catalina 37s, UH started strong and maintained momentum through the weekend. UH claimed first in three of eight races, including two of its first three and finished with a regatta low 33 points. Defending champ and host Cal Maritime finished second with 36 points

UH was led by skipper Owen Lahr and a crew that included Kelsie Grant, Kees Horn, Taylor Ledgerwood, Theodore Knobel,Everett McAvoy, Bastien Rasse, Chris Salas, Katherine Shofran, and Trey Summers

Meanwhile in the Bay Area, another set of Rainbow sailors claimed a regatta trophy as UH finished first in a field of 15 teams at the St. Francis Invitational in San Francisco. The 'Bows finished with a regatta low of 29, eight points ahead of second-place UCLA.

A total of 14 races were completed over the weekend, with UH scoring regatta-lows in both the A and B divisions. Erik Anderson and Frances Tarpey-Schwed finished in the top three in all seven of its races, including first place in its final two of the weekend to claim the A division.. Mercy Tangredi and Sophia Shaeffer took home the B division with an equally impressive weekend that saw them finish first in three of seven races.

The coed sailing team will return to action April 7-8  in the PCCSC Team Race Championship in Redwood City, Calif.
