HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in an 8-4 series-opening win over UConn Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
UH banged out 13 hits, 10 of which came off Huskies starting pitcher Ian Cooke, while the Rainbow Warrior pitching staff combined for a season-high 15 strikeouts while giving up just two earned runs.
The Rainbow Warriors (7-4) got the offense going early, going up 3-0 and racking up seven hits over the first two innings.
Ben Zeigler-Namoa led off the game with a base hit before coming around to score on an error to make it 1-0 after one inning.
UH added two more in the second on five hits in the frame to extend the lead. The 'Bows opened the inning with three straight hits as
Dallas Duarte singled,
Matthew Miura doubled and
Jordan Donahue scored Duarte with a single. Miura then came across to score on a ground ball double play that ricocheted off the UConn second baseman right to the shortstop for the 4-6-3 twin killing.
UConn (6-4) cut it to 4-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings, scoring on a balk in the third and a leadoff homer in the fourth. UH punched right back, scoring two more in the bottom of the fourth to chase Cooke.
After back-to-back walks to start the fourth, Zeigler-Namoa plated one with a double on a deep drive to right center.
Jacob Igawa made it 6-2 two batters later on an opposite field single, scoring Donahue and Zeigler-Namoa.
The 'Bows added single runs in the fifth and sixth to make it 8-2 before UConn put up an unearned run in the seventh to make it 8-3.
Alex Giroux delivered his third straight strong relief outing, striking out six over 3.2 innings to pick up the win. The righty owns a 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings over his last three appearances with 11 strikeouts and just three walks, with two wins over that stretch. Additionally,
Harry Gustin struck out a career-high six batters over 3.2 innings while
Connor Harrison fanned three over the final two innings.
Five Rainbow Warriors finished with multiple hits, led by Igawa who went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Miura came around to score three times, while going 1-for-3 with a double for the second straight game while Zeigler, Duarte, Donahue and
Jared Quandt all had two-hit games.
The Rainbow Warriors and Huskies continue their series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
