Late Rally Falls Short at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – Down by a run in the ninth inning, the Hawai'i baseball team had an opportunity to rally with the bases loaded but couldn't cash in to fall 3-2 at San Diego State Monday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

After San Diego State took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Rainbow Warriors responded by having three straight batters reach base with one out in the ninth. Jared Quandt got on base for the fourth time in the game with a single to right, followed by a Stone Miyao base hit to center and a Dallas Duarte hit by pitch. The 'Bows were unable to come through from there, as back-to-back strikeouts ended the game and left the bases loaded.

Neither team could get much going offensively early on, as the Aztecs scored the only run of the game over through six innings with a two-out run in the third.

The Rainbow Warriors (4-3) finally broke through in the seventh, taking advantage of some SDSU miscues to grab the lead. Quandt and Duarte both came through with base hits in the frame, and each came across to score on a passed ball to give UH a 2-1 lead.

The Aztecs (2-5) answered back immediately when Tino Bethancourt led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to tie it up at two. Pinch-hitter Maddox Haley then gave SDSU the lead in the eighth with a two-out single to make it 3-2.

Quandt continued his hot start to the season, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances by going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. On the mound, freshman Harrison Bodendorf struck out six over 3.2 innings in his first career start, while Connor Harrison fanned five over 3.2 innings of relief as UH pitching finished with a season-high 12 strikeouts.

The Rainbow Warriors will remain on the road as they join a field of SEC and Big Ten teams at the Cambria College Classic, Friday through Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
