KAPOLEI, O'ahu – For the second time in the last week, the University of Hawai'i men's golf team eclipsed the program-record for lowest 54-hole score after posting an 835 at the inaugural Kapolei Invitational following Thursday's final round at the Kapolei Golf Club.
The Rainbow Warriors closed out the tournament with a 9-under 279 for a 29-under total and 10
th place finish. Just several days ago, UH set the record with an 836 total at the Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Maui. The 29-under total also smashed the previous record in relation to par.
Leading the way for the Rainbow Warriors was
Kolbe Irei, who fired a final round 2-under 70 for a career-best 11-under 205 total and a tie for 16
th place. The 205 total is tied for the fifth-lowest in program history and lowest since TJ Kua set the program-record with a 14-under 202 at the 2011 Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational.
Loyola Marymount captured the inaugural title with an 806 total while Florida Gulf Coast (813) finished runner-up. Individually, LMU's Trevor Algya carded 17-under 199 to capture medalist honors, one stroke ahead of teammate Tony Hendricks.
UH's
Garrett Takeuchi shot 70 on Thursday and finished the tournament at 8-under 208 and a tie for 25
th place.
Blaze Akana carded the team's best round of the day at 3-under 69 and tied for 37
th at 7-under 209.
Isaiah Kanno tied for 80
th at 216 while
Josh Hayashida tied for 97
th at 221.
Dane Watanabe led UH's contingent of individuals with a 4-under 68 for a 213 total and tie for 62
nd. Also competing were
James Whitworth (73=214; t-69
th),
Tyler Ogawa (70=216; t-80
th), and
Anson Cabello (68=223; t-102
nd).
The tournament concluded the fall season for Hawai'i. The Rainbow Warriors will next hit the links at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, Feb. 8-10, at the Hāpuna Golf Course in Waimea, Hawai'i.
