Rainbow Wahine Roll Past UC Irvine; Igiede Hits Career Milestone

IRVINE, Calif. — Production from the pins and a career milestone for senior middle blocker Amber Igiede highlighted the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team's 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of UC Irvine in Friday's Big West match at Crawford Hall in Irvine, Calif.

Junior outside hitter Paula Guersching put away 12 kills on 22 attempts with no errors to hit a UH career-best .545 and freshman Tali Hakas tied her season high with 11 kills on 23 swings to help the Rainbow Wahine (18-8, 11-4 Big West) bounce back from a two-match skid with an 87-minute win to open their Orange County road trip.

Igiede finished with six kills and was in on eight blocks to pass 500 blocks for her career. She served up two of UH's five aces and the 'Bows completed a sweep of the regular-season series with the Anteaters (9-18, 7-9).

With her third block of the night, Igiede became just the fourth member of the program's 1,000-kill, 500-block club, joining former UH All-Americans Angelica Ljungqvist (1993-96), Suzanne Eagye (1984-87) and Deitre Collins (1980-83). For her career, Igiede now has 1,273 kills and 505 total blocks and is the sixth player in UH history to reach 500 blocks.

UH setter Kate Lang distributed 39 assists for an attack that hit .363 with just nine errors in 91 total attacks and posted a team-high eight digs.

The 'Bows hit .348 in the opening set while holding UC Irvine to five kills and six errors (negative-.040). The Anteaters led 6-4 before Igiede teamed with Lang on a block then delivered her first ace to spark an 8-1 UH run and the 'Bows closed the set with a 10-2 surge.

Hakas put away five kills in seven attacks in the second set and UH never trailed on its way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match. A four-point run with Riley Wagoner on the service line gave UH a 17-9 lead and a block by Hakas and Igiede punctuated the set.

Guersching took over in the third set with six kills in nine attacks and UH hit .371 to close out the match.  Guersching had three consecutive kills in a run that gave UH an 11-5 lead. Igiede and Hakas had two kills each and combined on a block in a five-poitn surge that extended the margin to 21-12 and Guersching's 12th kill ended the night.

The Rainbow Wahine face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday in their final road match of the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. HT at Titan Gym.
