ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Hawai'i football team lost is third straight game with a 42-21 road loss to New Mexico Saturday afternoon at University Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain West.
UH lost its 10th straight road game dating back to last year, six of them coming in Mountain West play. Meanwhile, the Lobos (3-4, 1-2 MW) halted a pair of their own futility streaks. New Mexico had previously lost 14 consecutive Mountain West games, ending the longest conference losing streak in the nation. UNM also ended a slide of 20 straight conference home games dating back to 2017.
The Lobos scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back in defeating UH for the first time since 2016. UNM scored on their first five possessions of the game with the exception of running out the clock heading into halftime. A balanced New Mexico attack racked up 261 yards in the first half alone as the UNM led 28-14 going into the locker room.
UH looked to stay within striking distance in the second half. But the Lobos scored on their first drive to take a commanding 21-point lead and the hole became too deep for UH to climb out of. UH committed four turnovers for the second straight game and went scoreless in the second half until a touchdown in the waning seconds.
Dylan Hopkins was an efficient 20-of-25 in passing for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Andrew Henry led the Lobo rushing game with 13 carries for 112 yards and one touchdown. It was the first 100-yard rusher that UH has surrendered this year.
Brayden Schager tossed for 300 yards for the third straight game, finishing with 345 yards on 33-of-52 yard passing with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Steven McBride caught two of those touchdowns, while finishing with a team-best five catches for 75 yards.
UH will next host San Jose State for a Homecoming matchup on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is 6:00 p.m. at the Ching Complex.
