HONOLULU — Maui was the focus in Mānoa on Friday night as the University of Hawai'i men's basketball fell to No. 23 Saint Mary's 92-58 in the OUTRIGGER Charity Invitational at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
In a first of its kind event for the UH program, the Rainbow Warriors and Gaels set up the exhibition game to benefit those impacted by the Maui wildfires that devastated parts of the Valley Isle in August.
Saint Mary's head coach Randy Bennett gave UH head coach
Eran Ganot his first coaching job 20 years ago. Ganot eventually served as Bennett's associate head coach before taking over at UH in 2015. Their connection contributed to putting together the exhibition, which drew 4,902 to the arena.
On the court, Saint Mary's, the preseason favorite in the West Coast Conference, controlled the paint and the perimeter in the 40-minute regulation contest. The Warriors and Gaels closed the evening with a 10-minute scrimmage featuring the teams' reserves.
UH senior guard
JoVon McClanahan, a preseason All-Big West pick, led the Rainbow Warriors with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field in regulation. Sophomore forward
Harry Rouhliadeff finished with nine points, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Saint Mary's guard Augustas Marciulionis scored 14 of his 22 points in the first half and had six assists. Guard Aidan Mahaney went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and scored a game-high 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting overall.
McClanahan scored the first four points of the game before Saint Mary's went on an 11-2 run and led for the remainder of the half.
Saint Mary's opened up its widest lead of the half at 46-24 on a Marciulionis 3-pointer. McClanahan hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving him 11 points in the half and sending the 'Bows into the break trailing 46-29.
Saint Mary's continued to extend the lead with a 14-4 surge to open the second half and finished with a 42-22 advantage in the paint and hit seven 3-pointers.
The teams got in some extra work in preparation for the season by ending the evening with a 10-minute scrimmage with the reserves playing to a 17-17 tie.
The Rainbow Warriors open the regular season on Nov. 14 against Hawai'i Hilo at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
