HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (0-1) fell in their first dual match of 2023 to East Tennessee State, 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. Senior Satsuki Takamura made her season debut winning both her singles and doubles matches to account for UH's two points in the match.

In doubles, the Buccaneers opened the match winning on Court #2, but on Court #3, Takamura and Ana Vilcek defeated ETSU's Emma Alfanso and Ralitsa Alexandrova, 6-3 to even things up. The Buc's Laylo Bakhodirova and Mariya Shumeika secured the doubles point by defeating UH's Nikola Homolkova and Klara Novakova, 6-3.

Takamura recorded her first singles win of the season, defeating Daniela Rivera in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Later UH's Madison Kim held off ETSU's Alexandrova in two, 6-3, 6-4 to cut the Buccaneers lead to 3-2. But the Buc's pulled out the final two matches to seal the win, 5-2. On court No. 2, UH's Homolkova was edged out in a hard fought battle that ended in a tiebereaker to Shumeika, 6-4, 7-6 (7). 

Up next for the Rainbow Wahine will face former WAC rival, San Jose State on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 2:30 P.M. HT at the UH Tennis Complex
