Mahalo For Supporting "Wahine on the Rise" Events

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i athletic department would like to extend a huge mahalo nui loa to its fans for helping celebrate the 50th Anniversary of both Title IX and Rainbow Wahine athletics by supporting two recent "Wahine on the Rise" events—the "Day of Giving" and "Field Day."

On Thursday, Sept. 1, in conjunction with the women's volleyball team's home opener, the Rainbow Wahine athletic teams held its first ever, "Day of Giving" in which generous fans, alumni and community leaders were able to donate directly to the team of their choice. To date, the fundraiser has received 595 gifts for a total of $253,363 which all goes towards the UH women's team(s) that each donor selected. The UH athletics department would also like to express its deep gratitude to the Wo Foundation for helping organize our "Wahine on the Rise" events and for generously matching $2,500 for each of UH's 12 wahine sports for a total donation of $30,000

On Saturday, Sept. 10th, Hawai'i hosted its first "Field Day" in which keiki and fans of all ages were invited to participate in interactive activities hosted by Rainbow Wahine student-athletes and coaches from 11 teams (except for women's volleyball). Everyone had a great experience teaching and learning at the free event and fans received giveaways including free t-shirts, free mouth guards (courtesy of Hawai'i Dental Service), free Coca-Cola products, and free tickets to that evening's women's volleyball match vs. Southern California.

50 Years of Title IX
The Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act requires any school receiving federal funds to offer equal opportunity without gender discrimination. Hawai'i's Patsy Mink, America's first Asian American Congresswoman, was Title IX's author and sponsor. The act was renamed in her honor in 2002.

50 Years of Access, Excellence and Achievement
More women on the fields of play means more women pursuing their academic dreams, and greater opportunity for students, families, and communities. Wahine athletics began at UH Mānoa in 1972 with volleyball and track & field. Today, 12 women's teams proudly wear the Green and White for 50 years of countless conference championships, including four this year in indoor volleyball, basketball, golf and water polo.

50 Years is Only the Beginning
Wahine on the Rise commemorates 50 years of achievements as we look forward to the next 50 years of Rainbow Wahine athletics.
