HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team routed CSUN 10-1 to complete their sixth straight series win.
The Rainbow Warriors (24-21, 15-9) continue their final game of the series dominance as they put up their fifth straight double-digit scoring event to close out the series. The Matadors (27-21, 15-12) have three conference games remaining on their schedule against UC San Diego.
The 'Bows jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after graduate
Cole Cabrera managed a walk and stole second to get into scoring position for sophomore third baseman
Kyson Donahue. Donahue then blooped a double down the left-field line scoring the first run. The next batter, junior right fielder
Matt Wong pushed a single through the middle of the infield and scored Donahue from second. Wong took advantage of a wild pitch to advance to third before being driven in because of an error.
In the bottom of the third sophomore,
Stone Miyao got the party started again and singled to center field.
Kyson Donahue then collected his second hit of the day and moved Miyao over to third. Wong stepped in and drove a ball to the right-field that went in and out of the right fielder's glove and allowed Miyao to score on the error. Freshman designated hitter
Bronson Rivera stepped in a grounded into a fielder's choice but gave Donahue enough time to score from third and extend the lead to 5-0.
Hawai'i struck again in the fifth as
Kyson Donahue picked up his second double and third hit to start the inning. Déjà vu as Wong stepped in and drove a ball in the outfield that allowed Donahue to score. Junior first baseman
Jacob Igawa picked up his second RBI of the day after taking a ball the opposite way for a double and driving in Wong. The final run of the inning came from sophomore catcher
Nainoa Cardinez hammering a single to right-center to grow the lead to 8-0 after five innings.
The Matadors got one back in the sixth after a walk and passed ball and got a pair of baserunners. CSUN was able to push across one of those on a groundout and got their first run to make it an 8-1 ballgame.
Miyao continued his production, starting the sixth off with a double down the right-field line.
Kyson Donahue reached base for the fourth time with a walk. Wong struck out on the next at-bat on a wild pitch that moved both runners into scoring position. Rivera contributed to the scoresheet again, this time with a single up the middle for two more RBIs.
CSUN could not get anything going offensively down the stretch as junior pitcher
Cameron Hagan closed out the final two and a third innings for a 10-1 victory.
Kyson Donahue led the charge offensively, going 3-for-3 with two walks, two doubles, and one RBI. Both Wong and Rivera combined for six RBIs, with three each.
It was a staff day for the 'Bows as four pitchers threw multiple innings and only allowed four hits, and one earned run.
The Rainbow Warriors head on their final road trip of the year, where they will play three games against UC San Diego and a final Monday game with Cal Baptist.
