HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (13-13, 7-4 Big West) were swept by Cal Poly in Friday's doubleheader at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Mustangs won the first game 7-3 and followed with a 12-2 win in seven innings.
GAME 1: Cal Poly 7, Hawai'i 3
The Mustangs got out of the gate fast posting five runs to start the game. The first two batters reached on a fielding error and a hit batter. Maddie Amos then lifted a three-run home run to left-center. Later Xiara Diaz hit a grounder that went through second for a double that drove in Lily Amos and after an error and a strike out, Kai Barrett hit an RBI-single scoring Juju Sargent for the 5-0 lead.
Hawai'i got two runs back in the bottom of the first as
Nawai Kaupe blasted a two-run home run to left-centerfield to score
Brittnee Rossi, who had singled to start the frame. For Kaupe, it was her team-leading sixth home run of the season and her 19
th of her career.
Cal Poly extended their lead to 7-2 with a bases loaded, RBI-single by Sargent. With the bases loaded again, UH's defense turned its 16
th double play of the season as first baseman
Dallas Millwood snared a line drive and threw to Kaupe covering second to double off the runner. An RBI-single by Hailey Prahm drove in M. Amos for the inning's second run.
UH's designated player
Haley Johnson led off the fourth inning with an opposite field, line drive home run that sailed over the leftfield fence. It was her second home run of the season.
Ka'ena Keliinoi followed with a base hit to center. UH went on to load the bases after a groundout and a pair of walks. But a strike out and a line out to second thwarted the rally. Cal Poly led 7-3 after four complete innings.
Hawai'i's
Brianna Lopez suffered the loss, dropping her record to 7-6. She allowed seven runs on 12 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Cal Poly's starter Krystyna Allman earned the win to improve to 6-11. She allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Paige Maier shutout the 'Bows to closed the game, she spaced three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
GAME 2: Cal Poly 12, Hawai'i 0
Cal Poly took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Prahm hit an RBI single down the leftfield line to score Sydney Frankenberger from second. Later with runners at first and third, Jessica Clements hit a single to the pitcher and on the play the runner from third, Prahm scored and the runner at first hustled into third with no one covering the bag.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 5-0 on a bases-clearing, 3-RBI double to leftfield by Frankenberger in the third.
Hawai'i got two runs back in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by
Maya Nakamura. For Nakamura it was her fourth homer of the season and eighth of her career.
The Mustangs answered with two runs in the fourth on a two-run home run by M. Amos. Cal Poly then added a Prahm solo home run in the fifth and M. Amos hit an RBI double to left-center to drive in Clements to

Cira Bartolotti, who has played in 41 career games either as a pinch-runner or an outfielder, made her first official collegiate appearance in the pitching circle to start the sixth. She fanned the first two batters she faced and got a fly out to right to retire the Mustangs in order.
But Cal Poly rallied to add three more runs in the seventh. Two runs came off a hard hit with the bases loaded by M. Amos and L. Amos followed with an RBI single to center to cap the scoring with the Mustangs leading 12-2.
Hawai'i's Ashley Murpy (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Bartolotti threw the final two innings in relief, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Cal Poly's Kate Judy (2-9) earned the complete game win, giving up two runs on five hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts.
For Hawai'i, the two losses marked the first Big West series loss this season. It is also the first time getting swept in a conference double header this season.
Hawai'i and Cal Poly will square off in the series finale on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
