Baseball Gets the 13-9 Win Against UCSB in 13 Innings

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team outlasted Santa Barbara 13-9 on Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (9-16, 3-6) avoid the sweep in a 13 inning, 5:20 marathon of a game. This coming week, the Gauchos (18-7, 7-2) look to Pepperdine and CSUN.

The 'Bows struck first in the top of the second inning when sophomore shortstop Kyson Donahue led off a double down the line before being moved over to third. Junior second baseman Stone Miyao with the infield playing in, hit one to the infield's right side, giving Donahue enough time to go up 1-0.

Santa Barbara got three runs back in the bottom of the third when they strung together four straight hits with two outs and took a 3-1 lead.

Donahue got his second double of the game in the top of the fourth before being driven in by a graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera double. Miyao followed up with another RBI single tying the game at 3-3.

In the bottom half, two errors allowed the Gauchos to scratch across a run.

A highlight for the 'Bows came in the top of the fifth when sophomore third baseman Aaron Ujimori blasted his first home run of the year.

The UH bullpen ran into trouble as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but managed to get out of the jam as they allowed only one run.

UCSB found an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run.

The 'Bows would not go quietly in the top of the ninth they managed to get a two-out rally started from a sophomore Naighel Ali'i Calderon single. Another single and a walk loaded the bases before a wild pitch brought a runner across, bringing it to a one-run game with the tying run 90 feet away. With a 1-1 count, junior catcher Dallas Duarte roped a single into right field, scoring two runs and giving the Warriors a 7-6 lead.

In the ninth, Santa Barbara, with a man in scoring position, found the gap, scored, and tied the game. The UH bullpen got out of another jam as the game headed to extras for the third time this season.

Nothing would come to pass until the top of the thirteenth inning, where UH found success. The first three batters of the inning reached base safely to provide a chance with no outs to get some runs across. Ujimori, in a spot to do more damage, barreled up a single for two more RBIs. Duarte kept the momentum and hit a long fly ball to get a sac fly. Finishing off the six-run inning was a two RBI base clearing double from Miyao.
UCSB got two across in the bottom of the thirteenth, but not nearly enough as the Warriors got the 13-9 victory.

Cameron Hagan (1-1) got credited with his first win on the season after pitching the final four and two-thirds innings, where he had seven strikeouts and two earned runs given up.

Donahue and Ujimori led the way with three hits each, while Donahue raked in two doubles. UH had five batters with multiple hits. Miyao led all batters with four RBIs, while three players had three or more for Hawai'i.

The Rainbow Warriors will travel south into Los Angeles for a non-conference matchup tomorrow against USC, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. HT.
