LONG BEACH, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (18-16, 12-7 Big West) fell in a 1-0 heartbreaker at Long Beach State in a pitcher's duel between UH's
Brianna Lopez and the Beach's Samantha Fowler. Long Beach State was able to scratch out a run in the fourth then held off Hawai'i the rest of the way on Friday afternoon at the LBSU Softball Complex.
In the loss, Hawai'i's Lopez fired her second-career one-hitter in her 16
th complete game of the season. She allowed just the one run with three walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work.
Long Beach State's Fowler also fired a complete game, shutting out the Rainbow Wahine. She allowed two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Beach broke the scoreless game, posting one run. Kyra Snyder drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a fielding error that left runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt by Jacquelyn Bicker moved both runners into scoring position and a ground out to third drove in pinch runner Rylie Seip to score the game's only run.
Hawai'i's
Maya Nakamura tallied both of UH's hits for the game. She finished going 2-for-3 at the plate. The Rainbow Wahine were able to get at least one runner on base in five of the seven innings played and left all six runners on base and only one able to advance to third.
Of note,
Ka'ena Keliinoi's 12-game hitting streak came to an end. While UH's defense turned its 21
st double play of the season.
Hawai'i and Long Beach State square off in a doubleheader at the LBSU Softball Complex on Saturday, April 30 with the first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m. HT.
