Rainbow Warriors Celebrate "Island Day" with a New Era of Football

HONOLULU—On a day filled with fun, excitement, and anticipation, the University of Hawai'i football team did not disappoint, as the "Island Day" spring football game was a resounding success.

The white team walked away with the win 27-24 Saturday evening on the scoreboard, but those in attendance were treated with more than a game. After a rainy morning in Manoa, the pregame concert featuring the Rebel Souljahz was moved from Les Murakami Stadium to SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The move and the weather didn't waiver those filing into Lower Campus Road as festivities were in full effect throughout the evening, including food trucks, Kids Zone, and various other activities.

As the day turned into night, fans and supporters got their first look at head coach Timmy Chang's brand of Rainbow Warrior football, featuring plenty of offense with the ball flying through the air at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.

Junior wide receiver Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala led the way with three touchdown receptions for the white team, accumulating over 130 yards receiving before being lifted at halftime. All three touchdowns were thrown by sophomore quarterback Jake Farrell as he was 12-of-16 through the air. His counterpart, sophomore Brayden Schager tallied one touchdown of his own, throwing for over 100 yards for the black squad in limited snaps. Schager, the only returning quarterback who saw significant playing time in 2021, connected with senior wide receiver James Phillips for a 26-yard touchdown.

Other standouts from the night included senior running back Dedrick Parson as he found paydirt of a 16-yard scamper for the black team. Senior wide receiver Zion Bowens flashed brilliance on a 47-yard reception for his lone catch of the night. Defensively, senior defensive back Leonard Lee came away with two interceptions, one in each half. Capping it all off was senior placekicker Matthew Shipley slugging a 55-yard field goal.

As 6,000-plus fans took in the night of fun and football, the 'Bows will continue with another week of practice as planned in their spring schedule. Season ticket deposits are being accepted now by the UH ticket office for the 2022 season, set to begin on August 27th against Vanderbilt at Ching Complex.
