Men's Tennis Drops Doubleheader At UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The 68th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (11-2, 4-1 Big West) dropped their doubleheader against #48th-ranked UCLA on Tuesday. In the first match, the Rainbow Warriors battled all match but came up short falling, 4-2, but in the second match, the Bruins took control early and never let up at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins edged out the Rainbow Warriors, 4-2. The last two singles matches were highly competitive and went the distance of three exceiting sets each.
 
Hawai'i won the doubles point to start the day with UH's No. 3 duo Simäo Telo Alves and Kilian Maitre overwhelmed UCLA's Jeffrey Fadkin and Karl Lee, 6-1. UH's No. 1 pair of Andre Ilagan and Karl Collins then took down Giacomo Revelli and Patrick Zahraj by a break to capture the opening point.
 
UCLA roared back in singles winning the first three matches to take a 3-1 lead. UH's Maitre fell on the No. 6 court to Stefan Leustian, 6-0, 6-2. UCLA's Revelli then defeated Blaz Seric, 6-2, 6-4 and UCLA's Zahraj followed with an upset over UH's 27th-ranked Andre Ilagan in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Hawai'i's Guillaume Tattevin stemmed the momentum momentarily, winning his match on the No. 4 court over Eric Hahn, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to cut UH's deficit to 3-2. Then it was left to the final two matches left—No. 3 UCLA's Karl Lee vs. UH's Axel Labrunie and at No. 5 Bryce Pereira vs. Karl Collins. In the third set, Labrunie was broken early by Lee, but soon after Labrunie was able to battle back to record a break to go back on serve. Labrunie was serving for his match at 6-5 when Collins' match ended the match. Collins fell to Pereira who clinched the match in slugfest, 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-5.

The Bruins won the doubles point to start the second match of the day. UH's No. 1 pair of Ilagan and Collins defeated UCLA's Revelli and Zahrah for the second time on Tuesday, 6-2. But UCLA's Pereira and Leustian combine to knock off UH's Alves and Maitre, 6-2 and then the Bruin's No. 2 duo of Wild and Fradkin then held off UH's Seric and Labrunie by a break, 7-5 to secure the point.
 
In singles, UCLA's No. 4 Lee defeated Tattevan in consecutive sets, 6-3, 6-0 and then Bruins' No. 2 Revelli followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over UH's Seric. The final two finished matches ended simultaneously. No. 5 Pereira edged out UH's Collins, 6-2, 6-4 and on the No. 6 court, UCLA's Leustian concurrently recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hawai'i's Alves.
 
For the Rainbow Warriors, the sweep by UCLA was its first suffered since falling to Fresno State on March 8, 2019, 4-0.
 
Hawai'i has 12 days until their next match on Sunday, April 24 at UC Irvine before beginning the Big West Championship tournament from April 29-May 1 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
