HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i baseball team dropped the fourth and final game of its series with Vanderbilt University, 2-1 at Les Murakami Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Rainbow Warriors (4-8) dropped all four games of the series; in 2021, UH was swept four times during the campaign. The Commodores (10-2) extended their win streak to nine games and will return home to host Wagner in a three-game series.
UH grabbed the lead for the first time in the series, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning. Junior right fielder
Matt Wong led off the inning with a double down the left-field line, sophomore third baseman
Aaron Ujimori followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners and no outs. Following a strikeout of
Bronson Rivera, Wong scored on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff play, making it 1-0.
Junior
Cade Halemanu dazzled in his third start of the season, turning in his best performance on the young season. Totaling five and third innings, Halemanu struck out four while allowing just one hit and one earned. The lone run he gave up was after exiting the game with freshman
Harry Gustin coming on in relief. Power hitting right fielder Spencer Jones launched an opposite-field homer to left field for a two-run homer giving the Commodores the leadoff Gustin, one they wouldn't relinquish.
The 'Bows had their chances throughout, as they outhit Vanderbilt eight to six but left nine runners on base for the afternoon.
Sophomore
Tai Atkins recorded another stellar outing as he pitched the last three innings, keeping the 'Bows in the game by only allowing one hit, no walks, and striking out three. Gustin (0-3) recorded the loss while facing one batter and did not record an out.
Next up, the 'Bows will host Rutgers in a four-game series, beginning on Friday with Rutgers.
